As digital and complicated as the world of electronic fuel injection has become, carburetion still has more history. That can make choosing a carburetor a heavy task. Here’s a few things you’ll need to know before making your decision.
A carburetor is designed to do one thing: deliver fuel vapor to your engine. Obviously how much fuel it delivers can have a significant impact on your performance. The more you can dump into the cylinders, the more power you’ll get – for a while. You will get to a point where you’re wasting fuel, and then you’ll have to upgrade your ignition system, cam, and cylinder heads. Over carbureting a motor can be as detrimental as under carbureting.
But for now, pay attention to the carburetor’s CFM rating. It stands for Cubic Feet per Minute, which is how fuel vapor delivery is measured. On the high end, you’ll see carburetor CFM ratings of 1000-1250. On the low end, 350-470. Lower CFM ratings will improve your fuel economy, so if you’re not looking for extreme performance, you don’t have to get the biggest.
The other chief carburetor term you’ll need to know is barrel, oddly abbreviated “bbl.” This is where the fuel and air mix, and contains the fuel passage, known as the venturi. Most automotive carburetors use 2 or 4 barrels. If you’re looking for a higher performing carburetor, you’ll probably want a four-barrel. For a simple cruiser, two should be plenty.
With so much history, carburetors have carved out a complex science, and there are many factors to consider when choosing the right one for your system.
