Believe it or not, the first nerf bars appeared on low, fast race cars to protect their light, fragile bodies from "nerfs" when other drivers would bump them.  It was a tactic widely used then, and while safety (and increased speed) demanded the banning of the nerf, and subsequently, the nerf bar, but truck owners still found them useful, now to protect their truck sides from unseen hazards.  Today's nerf bars also serve as step bars, and any step bar will make your truck safer and easier to climb into.
