A power programmer is a quick and easy way to add power and control to your vehicle.  Today's power programmers are simple to use and offer a broad selection of options to those looking for improved fuel economy, increased horespower or a better ability to monitor multiple engine parameters.  In addition to engine programmers for performance cars, there are truck programmers and diesel engine programmers designed with the pick-up driver in mind.  Whatever you drive, there is likely a programmer to meet your needs.  Go get one.

Engine Power Programmers

An engine performance programmer is known for being a quick, affordable, and highly effective way of extracting more performance out of your car or truck. You plug it in, answer some questions about modifications, driving style, and use and the power programmer automatically adjusts your vehicle’s engine and ECU settings to the optimal levels for your needs. Engine programmers are also ideal when you have changed your tire’s rolling diameter with larger wheels or made any type of adjustment to the final drive ratio and transmission gearing. Many of the issues you would need a repair technician for can be handled right in your driveway.

How Power Programmers Work

Traditionally, engine power programmers are best suited to work with SUV's and pickup trucks because of their large displacement and better response to fuel, air, and ignition modifications. Cummins Duramax, and Powerstroke diesels see an additional benefit with the ability to adjust boost pressure. However, power programmers for gas trucks with EFI also benefit from:

  • Increased peak horsepower and torque
  • Larger total area under the torque curve
  • Faster turbo spool
  • Increased fuel economy
  • Better towing ability
  • Ability to clear diagnostic trouble codes
  • Toolset to correct speedometer and RPM settings


Your engine power programmer module will generally plug into the diagnostic port under your dashboard so there are no modifications required. Best of all, power programmers are removable and tunable so that you can fine to its settings and get exactly what you want out of your ride. It can sometimes be mounted to your dash and display performance data while your drive.

Optimize the Air/Fuel Ratio
Utilizing your performance programmer, you can automatically manage your engine’s air/fuel ratio to optimal performance. Ensuring the ideal amounts of each combined with exact ignition spark timing, the power programmer will extract the most power out of each combustion stroke.

Tune the Ignition Timing
The timing of each ignition point based on the volume of air and fuel and the location of the piston’s ideal compression point is a key component in the engine output formula. A power programmer will automatically determine the ideal timing and correlate it to the mix of air and fuel into the cylinders. Additionally, if you select to run a higher grade of fuel octane, it can select a more aggressive timing and mixture to take full advantage of the improved vaporization.

Remove Speed Limiter
Some vehicles suffer from a manufacturer’s preset speed limiter set relatively low. With a power programmer in hand, you can remove that limiter for when your make quarter mile passes down the strip. You can easily increase top speed of your car in certain cases

Adjust Rev Limiter
An additional benefit of using a plug-in power programmer for tuning purposes is the ability to adjust your rev limiter. If you have made modifications that move your peak power points either higher or lower in the RPM band, the module can adjust for those modifications so that you spend the most time accelerating within the most beneficial power band.

Correct Speedometer
Got a truck with a lift kit and some big tires? An engine programmer can adjust the speedometer to the correct setting if you made a change to your tire size or you modified your drive ratio in some way.
